New MapServer website goes live

It all started with me complaining. MapServer needed a website that could serve its users better, be more responsive to current documents and tools that were coming out there, and be editable through the web. My complaining turned into some meetings over IRC (which incidentally bootstrapped the thriving #mapserver community we now have on irc.freenode.net) in the summer of 2004.

I put up the first prototype on UMN’s servers about this time last year. Throughout the year, it was continually improved, organized, and updated. We kept trying to match up with MapServer releases, but as is normal with just about all software, things slipped a bit. MapServer 4.8 is just around the corner (betas are now available if you’re interested), and while MapServer’s release date slipped, the webite made it this time :)

I would like to thank Jeff McKenna of DM Solutions and Kari Geurts of UMN for the hard work they contributed to the site in the form of IRC meetings, documenting, organization, and feedback. There were many others who also helped. Thanks to them as well. It was a long time coming and a lot of heavy lifting.

Enjoy the new site!
